It is so cold today that....

"How cold is it?"  It is so cold today that...I had polar bears cavorting in my yard this morning...

Okay, so they are the neighbor's dogs, but  when I glanced out my window they looked an awful lot like polar bears!!

It is so cold today that...boiling water converts to steam when tossed into the air!

With temperatures in the below zero range, and windchill temperatures lower than I can even comprehend, farmers and ranchers are heading out to take care of livestock and chores.  It is so cold today that....we can't get one of our tractors to start, thereby delaying feeding cattle! Our other tractor started fine and the boys are busy feeding hay to the cattle so they have energy to withstand the temperatures.

It is so cold today that....one of our automatic waterers froze solid!  Cattle can handle below freezing temperatures if they are dry, adequately fed, and have plenty of water.  They also like to have a warm straw bed to lie on, but if they have all these things they prefer to be outside even on days like today!

One of my favorite Christmas movies has a great line from Yukon Cornelius who is tracking the Abominable Snowmonster...."it is not fit for Man nor Beast!"  and that is true of this day, except that when properly cared for, the beasts actually can be very happy outside today. So the farmers bundle up and head out to make sure they are taken care of and only then can we enjoy a day inside.

It is so cold today that...bubbles blown outside freeze immediately. I don't have a good picture of them, but I have seen it all over facebook today, so if you have a good picture, please share it with us!

And, it is so cold today that....I got a call from an AP reporter asking how we are coping with the weather and how the cattle are doing! Now...answer this question...."HOW COLD IS IT?" at your place today!!!

  1. Here in central Florida it is to get down to 27 tonight, thats cold for here, the citrus can stand 27 for about four hours and then they are lost. strawberries are on now so the farmers will spray a water mist over them when it hits freezing and the ice will protect the vine and berries from freezing. tropical fish farmers will run warm well water in the outside ponds and try to keep the water warm enough to save the fish. my son in law will stay at the groves all night and when it hitss 28 he will start the drip water system and protect the trunk and roots of the trees. a lot of his trees (about 6000) have a green disease and he has to push them out and burn them this year. he will replant and it will be about 5 years before he has a crop again. People don't think of cold weather hurting farmers in Florida but so many crops are in now and they will be lost, big fields of tomatoes just being picked. I hope you and the family stay warm and safe and the livestock come through all this ok.

    1. Wow! I had no idea they were picking tomatoes right now and that strawberries were on the vine now too! I love hearing about different parts of the country. We are so blessed that we have modern transportation and can share your delicious produce with us in the bitter cold!! Thanks for what you do and good luck to your son who will be struggling with the replanting of citrus trees!

  4. Well, since I'm in KS too it was VERY cold! Hubby had to go out at 5:30 a.m. to put a small heater in the water meter since our water was frozen up. I've seen the bubble deal, I haven't tried it yet though!
