Wildlife Photography - Owl

Wildlife is one of my favorite things about living in the country. A couple of weeks ago, I was driving near sunset and passed this owl sitting on a fencepost along the state highway. I couldn't pass up the photo opportunity.

By the way, you may or may not know, but I am a huge Harry Potter fan! My daughter started reading the Harry Potter books in 3rd grade and by 4th grade she was a fan--so I began reading them. I love the imagination and creativity of the author J.K. Rowling.

So when I saw this owl, I figured he had delivered the invitation to attend Hogwarts to some young wizard in our rural area....unless there is an American version of wizard school. Actually, I'm sure there must be--anyway, I have been scrutinizing the 11-year olds around here lately to figure out which one it might be!

I was amazed how unafraid this owl was. I stayed in my truck, parked along the road, less than 20 yards from him. Through my rolled down window, I snapped photo after photo of him. He (or she) cocked his head a time or two, but seemed only slightly interested in what I was doing.
As the sun set, the color of the grasses behind him and his feathers began to change to a golden/russet. Absolutely beautiful evening!
Finally he became tired of me--or he realized that I had probably scared off all the mice and other varmints that he had been stalking. Sorry, Mr. Owl. But he flew away quite quickly to find another spot to perch.

  1. Great pictures! One time an owl found its way into our barn and we thought it was fake until he or she moved. It's crazy how calm they can be.

    1. Thanks! I think I often take for granted how much wildlife we see in a day in rural Kansas. We are very blessed.

  2. I loved the photos! We had an owl in the silo once that I got great photos of. I couldn't believe he let me get as close as he did. I wondered if he might have been injured. Your photo subject seemed plenty able to soar!

    1. Thanks! Yes, I don't think this owl was injured, but I might have chased off his meal...dang. He was beautiful!!

  3. They are pretty neat, aren't they? Once while on an early morning trail run, an owl had the nerve (or the bad vision) to grab me by the ponytail! After screaming like a little girl, I calmed down enough to rationalize that he probably thought my ponytail was a squirrel. Talk about adrenaline rush! Needless to say, I skipped my morning coffee that day :)

    1. Omigosh!! That is wild! I can't imagine how freaky that must have been! Just remember, he was at the end of his day and he was getting ready to go to bed--might have just wanted to give you a thrill. :)

    1. Thanks, Clark! I am definitely not a professional like you, but I do love wildlife and often have my camera at hand. I suppose I should actually get a bit of training in photography!! But thanks for your support.
